Why should I study this subject at Key Stage 4?


Psychology is all about studying both the brain and behaviour and how to ensure that we are being curious, rather than judgemental, about the behaviour that we may see people demonstrating. Psychology helps us to understand some of the reasons why people may behave the way they do.


This engaging and effective qualification introduces students to the fundamentals of psychology, developing critical analysis, independent thinking and research skills.
 
What does the course involve?


Over the two years students will cover 8 topics as follows:


Paper 1:
Memory
Perception
Development
Research methods

Paper 2:
Social Influence
Language, thought and communication
Brain and neuropsychology
Psychological problems

Each unit will be assessed through timed internal end of unit tests with questions reflective of real exams. These will consist of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions and will take place in a normal classroom environment. Mock exams will be held inline with the school calendar.  

Skills developed


Students will learn how to think critically about human behaviour. They will develop the ability to evaluates both theory, treatments and research methodology of psychological investigation. This course will provide a secure basis for students wishing to study Psychology at A-Level.


Career progression


Psychology lends itself to a wide range of careers, including those working alongside other people. This might include sport psychology, police, law, teaching, counselling, Health and Social Care, medicine, psychiatry, business.
