Year 12 Students Visit Cambridge University

On Tuesday 27th January, a group of 24 Year 12 students from Thomas Gainsborough School, comprising both boys and girls, took part in an inspiring Cambridge University outreach visit at St Catharine’s College.
The visit gave students a valuable insight into life at Cambridge, with opportunities to explore the college, learn about academic expectations and gain a clearer understanding of what studying at a world-leading university involves. Throughout the day, students engaged enthusiastically with the sessions, asking thoughtful questions and reflecting on their own aspirations for higher education.
A highlight of the visit was an afternoon session led by Megan Turner, a former TGS student and current Cambridge undergraduate. Megan spoke openly about her own journey from TGS to Cambridge, helping to demystify the application process and offering practical advice and reassurance. Her session was both informative and inspiring, and it was particularly meaningful for students to hear directly from someone who once sat in their place.

The visit feels especially significant following the fantastic news that three current Year 13 TGS students have recently received offers to study at Cambridge University for a September start, including two at St Catharine’s College. Following in the footsteps of Gemma Deacon and Megan Turner, this continues to build an impressive Cambridge legacy for the school.

We would also like to thank Emily, Student Liaison at St Catharine’s College, who was outstanding throughout the day in supporting our students. We are delighted that Emily will be visiting TGS in the near future to speak with KS3 and KS4 students, helping to raise aspirations even further.
This visit was a powerful reminder of what TGS students can achieve, and we look forward to building on this success in the years ahead.

Thanks also to Katy Osborne and Pip Cook for facilitating this fantastic annual event.
